How Big Should Your Barndo Shop Be? A Sizing Conversation

Nobody regrets the size of their shop in square feet — they regret what didn’t fit. A builder’s method for sizing barndo shops around real life.

Nobody ever tells us their shop is the wrong number of square feet. They tell us the trailer doesn’t fit with the tailgate down, or the welding bench ended up in the truck’s spot. Size the shop around what has to happen inside it — the square footage falls out of that.

Start with the list, not the number

  • What parks inside — trucks, trailer, tractor, toys? Measure the longest thing with its hitch.
  • What work happens — wrenching, welding, wood? Each wants bench, clearance, and power.
  • What stores — feed, tack, seasonal gear? Vertical space is cheap; plan the racking now.
  • What might come later — a lift? A bigger trailer? Steel spans make width easy today and expensive to add tomorrow.

The dimensions that actually matter

  • Door height & widthSized for the tallest, widest thing you’ll ever bring home — not the one you own today.
  • Depth with room to walkVehicle length plus workbench plus walking room. The tape measure is honest; memories aren’t.
  • Ceiling clearanceIf a lift is ever in the dream, the height decision happens at design, not later.
  • Slab & power for the workWelder circuits, compressor drops, and floor drains cost little on paper and a lot afterward.

“Design the shop for the biggest day it will ever have, not the average Tuesday.”

Shop-first design

Where the living side fits

A good barndo plan lets the shop and the home share a roofline without fighting — sound, smell, and the mud path all planned. That’s the argument in shop-first homes, and it’s exactly the kind of trade-off our cost guide walks through openly.
